As the weather improves and we spend more time outdoors our thoughts turn to outdoor dining. This may be a barbeque with family and friends or a celebration buffet on the lawn whatever the occasion a summer picnic never fails to please.
When planning a picnic for a small group of people it is important to provide a range of different options keeping in mind that people like a variety of foods to choose from. Sandwiches are usually popular but ideally should be made on the morning of the picnic so that they are still fresh. Ham is a good filling as is cheese and small pots of pickle or mayonnaise can be provided for those wanting these accompaniments.
Pastry items are popular for a picnic but rather than choosing the normal sausage rolls and pork pie look for alternatives such as cheese and onion rolls and small pasties. Quiche is a delicious alternative if you want a healthier choice.
It is always a good idea to include some salad items in a picnic and if they are cut into strips they are much easier to eat. Carrot, cucumber, sugar snap peas and baby peppers provide a colourful and delicious addition to your summer picnic.
